Out of this World Blanket

Out of this world baby blanket

N and V are pregnant, and expecting a baby boy in April 2016. It’s an exciting time for them, as this is their first. My friend Steph organized a really great baby shower for them, and everything was themed “Out of this world”. There were rockets, stars, planets, NASA and even some posters from the Jet Propulsion Lab.

There was a cake with the baby astronaut in marzipan, a diaper cake with stars and a rocket on top…

and plenty of games – including one where we had to taste baby food and identify it, another where we had to write on diapers (late night messages for the parents), and plenty of laughs at the “pacifier straws”.

There were also plenty of gifts for the little bundle and the new parents.

For me, because I can crochet, I do my best to make sure that the gift is handmade because it’s always a nice gift to get something where the time is spent making it -just the same as the ‘mom’ has been spending time making the baby. 🙂 This time, I made a baby blanket in a ridged vine pattern that reminded me of the rockets taking off into the sky. It’s in James C Brett Marble DK in blues / greens shade. It took me about a week after work to make the whole thing including the edges.

I think it was a hit – and I can’t wait to see little V using it!

Macnas Giant Puppet Halloween Parade

Parade of the Macnas as part of the Bram Stoker festival. @bramstokerdub @macnasireland #parade #festival #dublin #ireland #bramstoker #macnas #puppet #rain #autumn #halloween #warewolf #crow #raven #stag #deer

For the last few years, Dublin City has hosted the Bram Stoker Festival. This is a week long festival that runs right before Halloween and celebrates everything about Bram Stoker and books like Dracula. As time has gone on, the festival has rolled into a week long celebration of Creepyness, horror, Vampires, and anything to do with Halloween and spooky Samhain tales. The best part of the festival is that most events are free.

This year, there was a parade that started from 3 different locations in the city center, all converging on Wolf Tone Square, behind the Church Bar & restaurant in the city center. Each segment of the parade included a different giant animated “puppet” on wheels, a band / musicians, and a following of the watchers from the segment of the Parade. The parade spectacle (puppets) are owned by Macnas – an Irish performance company out of Galway. When I saw the preview, I thought:

Who doesn’t love puppets?

and Had to go. From their website at: http://www.bramstokerfestival.com/event/macnas/

The Macnas were designed to tell a story – of “Danu, Goddess of the Divine and Dark: brutal and beautiful, warrior and mother, hallowed and holy, she protects and provokes, takes flight and goes underground.
Mummers and drummers follow and seek. Demons and angels love and loathe, the dead dance and the living transform. Men become gods, fools become Kings, souls are sanctified, reptiles are rarefied and the city streets transform as the journey unfolds.”

Thus it was that B and I left work, took the bus to town and then proceeded down Mary Street in the pouring rain. After waiting nearly 1.5 hours (ok we did go shopping to pass the time) we were quite soaked (even with our umbrellas, as you can see above) but filled with excitement as we could hear the pops and bangs of the fireworks, feel the drumbeat and marching from up the street… and then… to our delight, the festivities began. Closer and closer they came…

Perched at the T junction, we were in the perfect spot. First came the giant Raven (Never more!) flapping his wings and moving his head… and accompanied by a blaring brass band in a cage. Below them were people dressed as various creepy characters like lizards and chameleons… all dancing to the music.

As they passed and turned to go into the square, we looked to our left to discover the next segment of the parade was headed our way…. The Giant Stag… was coming up, followed by gnomes, witches and ghouls!

Finally, from the third point up Mary Street came the sound of drummers *thud* *thud* *thud* and out of the crowd appeared a giant Wolf and the Devine Danu, a nearly 4 story tall female puppet whose head turned, hands and feet moved, and eyes blinked to survey the swirling crowd around her.

We followed Danu and the Stag into the square (the weather still being bleak and rainy) over puddles and muddy packed dirt and up onto some benches where we could see the party begin. Dancers with fire lit torches swirled, The lizard and chameleon costumed individuals pulsated around the crow, and the gnomes and witches made wise cracks next to the giant horned Stag.

As the music reached a cacophony of sound and colored flashing lights moved with the party spectacle suddenly there was a pause… A flare was lit… and then….

FIREWORKS!

From the top of the buildings in the square, a series of white fireworks shot into the sky to the oohs and ahhs and cheers of the crowd. Halloween week in Dublin has begun!

*Special thanks to the Bram Stoker Festival for sponsoring the free event, and Macnas performance company for really making the spectacle special!*

Leo’s Birthday Circus

Leo's 3 Ring Circus Cakes. #PhotoGrid

**Photo heavy. Please let this one load. ** One of my best friends in Ireland had a little boy who is celebrating his first birthday today. The birthday party theme is “circus”, and as a part of it, I was asked to make the 3 ring circus cakes.

I’ve made cakes before, and decorated them with regular icing and piping. However, this one was a challenge. This was my first time working with roll out icing, and I’m not sure I would do it again, though I’m quite happy with how they turned out. Everyone at the party was quite impressed.

The first thing I did was Wednesday night, when I baked 3 marble cakes. There were 2 9-inch, and 1 12 inch made in the pan.

Thursday night, I frosted each one with a beautiful chocolate icing. Then, I added the rolled out frosting to the top and smoothed it out. Once that was complete, the decorating began.

Colored Fondant was rolled out in green and red, and I cut out diamonds, circles, and little “flag” shapes to go around the edges of two of the cakes. For the third, the tops and bottoms of what would become the circus train were cut out and attached using sugar paste glue. I also added marshmellows (for the platforms for the animals) and some edible printed cupcake decorations which had the “tent”, “ring master”, and “clowns”.

At that point, I also added some words in colored icing, and then decided to let everything set up because it was midnight, and the Barnum’s animal crackers that mom had shipped from the US hadn’t arrived yet. On Saturday, I headed to the party a couple hours early – with the needed bits to complete the cake. Luckily, J’s package from the US had arrived – with Barnum’s Animal Crackers – so I could complete the cakes.

Slowly, I sorted through the animals, attaching the Elephants, Bears, Seals, Giraffes, Lions, and tigers around the larger of the cakes. Then, I added chocolate “bars” to each of the Circus train car carriages.

To the top of each cake, I took a pair of scissors and “snipped” the top of each marshmellow and added the Animal biscuits inside. Then came the “decorating” of the marshmellows – to look like “drums” and adding of gumdrops (also in the shape of the “drums”) and other little details. This “completed” the 3 cakes, of the three ring circus.

In the end, they turned out looking pretty great, and with the addition of the candles (one for each cake – he was turning 1 – not 3) it looked pretty spectacular, now, let’s eat!
