Dublin Street Art

A little bit of street art in Dublin. #dublin #ireland #streetart #sugarskull #skull #graffitiart #graffiti #moustache #movember

Wandering around the city this week, I took a few pictures of some graffiti. Now to me, I don’t like tagging, but a good bit of street art in graffiti style murals will make me pause and enjoy. It can be a political statement, a decoration, or just a bit of abstract art – and viola – it simply adds a bit of “alt-culture” to the area – and to me, enriches the entire experience of city life. Basically, it breaks up the grey concrete that is urbanity and replaces it with… COLOR!

The thing is that street art – proper street art – while created with the basics of a design and spray paint – is actually proper art. It takes practice, it takes vision, and it takes a certain amount of balls to go to a business owner and ask hey, do you mind if… (or even more so if you’re doing an entire mural in the dark of night). Note that I don’t agree with illegal activity – nor with vandalism in general. That leads me to the quesiton – is art vandalism… well. That’s not for me to decide. I suppose in this case, it’s all in the eye of the beholder. (Or is it in the case the “bolder?”)

My advice to those that are in cities – be bold, work with the community, and put up more street art. 🙂

Big Love – Guinness World Record & Marriage Equality

Big love - guinness record

On April 25, in the pouring down rain, I headed into Dublin City, near an area called Smithfield Market. I met up with my friend S, and we headed to brunch at Wuff. We met up at 10 AM, and despite the pouring down rain, our spirits were high as we chowed down on Eggs Bennedict and a gorgeous Belgian waffle. We were about to help make history.

In Ireland, on May 22, 2015 is a national referendum in support of Marriage Equality. The passage of the referendum (a Yes vote) will allow for LGBT couples to get legally married in Ireland. My company, and my personal beliefs fully support this yes vote – as I think that each adult should have the opportunity to marry and commit should they wish to do so.

What does this ticket and the statement above have to do with setting a Guinness world record?

Well, my company, eBay, has a Social Innovation team. That team, in association with the USI (the Union of Students in Ireland) encouraged us to take part in the USI Big Love Campaign for marriage equality. It’s really quite simple – participants stand together, making the shape of the one symbol which means ‘love’ all around the world while attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the largest human image of a love-heart.

Around 11:30, S and I dashed over to Oscar’s Bar & Restaurant in Smithfield to meet up with the rest of the social innovation team. It was still raining, and we all fell into the seating area (shaking off the damp) with the need of hot tea and coffee. Once we gathered, starting around noon, participants lined up around the market square and started receiving ponchos, red tshirts, leaflets and bracelets.

After listing to some music and some speakers in support of the Yes Vote, over the course of the next hour we were filed into the center of market square and gradually formed the love heart from the bottom up. Formation complete, we heard one last song, cheered lots, and had pictures made by several groups that were up on the telephone box lifts.

So, did we set a world record? Yes, we did. Over 450 people came out (despite the rain – we were soaked through by the end) and made the love heart. Here’s hoping that the Yes Vote passes on May 22nd!

Kilkenny, Ireland at Night

Kilkenny, Ireland.
Fortification along the River Nore at Night

In yesterday’s post, I gave a history of Kilkenny and lots of the pictures taken during the day time. B and I actually spent the night at the Ormonde hotel in Kilkenny – and were pleasantly surprised with our last minute booking. The room was great and the hotel has a great breakfast selection. I would recommend staying there if you get the chance.

Staying over night, of course, gave us a chance to wander around at night and experience some of the sites and bar scene. We wandered from our hotel and got a few pictures of the Castle above, before going across the river and passing the newly remodeled River court hotel (below) which re-opened this spring.

We walked up the main street, and headed to the Kilford Arms hotel. Now the hotel I can’t say much – as I’ve never stayed there, but inside the hotel, there’s a bar which the architecture is simply awesome. The bar re-uses old Abby (cloister?) ruins as features in the architecture. It totally impressed B, and we enjoyed both the atmosphere and the charm of the decor. Some photos from inside below:

Once we left there, we headed back toward the river and passed several bars, before popping into another bar to warm up and try the flaming Pig whiskey. Then we headed on to Bridies, which we were hoping to get into once it opened.

Bridies was interesting – the front entry way area was like an old general store / candy shop. Filled with old style goodies in floor to ceiling shelves. However, as you crossed through the “western style” swing doors to the back room, you found a long bar with comfortable seating in the pub. Here, we stopped for our third whisky of the night Paddy’s this time and had a few laughs with the local musicians. It was a classic Irish sing along – and lovely B graced us with a solo of O Solo Meo! Despite saying she couldn’t sing, it was lovely!

From here, we headed to an Italian Restaurant where B said it was just like home (the Best Italian I’ve ever had for sure!). I didn’t get a picture (sadly) but totally enjoyed it. (there are actually several good Italian restaurants in Kilkenny)

As we wandered back to the hotel with full bellies, we went into the Left Bank (quite full for an evening in January),

And then back up past a shop (onlookers) before heading to bed.

The next morning, we headed back to Dublin, Renewed, and happy to have gotten a breath of fresh air. 🙂 I’ll have to come back to Kilkenny and explore further – perhaps this summer.
