Swimming at the Schlactensee

Yesterday was my last day of German classes. I had to leave early because I’m getting ready to move to Ireland in the next 2 weeks. It’s been a great class, despite this June and July being the hottest month in Germany in 110 years (Nearly 3 weeks of over 100 F temperatures), and I’ve made many friends from around the world through my classmates.

On Thursday, after learning the Dative tense and prepositions galore, it seemed like we all were having a headache or not feeling so well in the very hot room. We had lots to drink, but despite it all, we were wiped out. Anke, our awesome teacher suggested that we take a day off and head over to a lake and go swimming as a class. She thought we were doing well enough for a day to relax, cool off, and practice German in the “real” world where we needed it most. We all promptly agreed that it was a great idea – and would rather do that than spend another day in a 122 F classroom trying to make our mind work when all we wanted to do was cool off.

So, we met in the front of the school on Friday, swimsuits on under our clothes, towels and picnic blankets in hand, and headed out.

On the S1, there's no a/c - and at 37C, we're hot!

(William from Cuba, Julian from South Africa, and Yanli from China on the train)

40 minutes later (and one unexpected slam on the breaks stop on the U-bahn that nearly knocked me over – thanks guys for catching me before I fell!) we arrived – still melting from the heat, but looking forward to the lake shore.

I was pleasantly surprised – the place was rather large. It had nice terraces for setting up the blankets under pine trees and built-in stairs toward the water. The entry to the water was restricted by bushes spaced out by 3 to 4 foot wide sandy areas, and there were the occasional oak tree dipping down toward the water as well. We looked about for 10 or 15 minutes – because in the heat, the place was quite full. Finally, we settled on a spot one terrace up from the water, one terrace down from the Soccer and Volleyball area. Katlyn and Julian quickly unpacked and settled in, as did the rest of us.

Once we were settled, some folks decided to head off and play volleyball for a bit, while others decided to play badminton.

Still others decided to stay behind and chat. Finally, after the others returned – having worked up a sweat in the heat, we all decided to head down to the lake for a swim (or to put our feet in the nice refreshing water!).

I joined in playing keep away, monkey in the middle, and bouncing the ball back and forth for a while. Finally, Jair decided to teach the guys how to dive into the water “Brazilian” style.

Jair explaining to Julian

The thing with this conversation is that Jair speaks Portuguese and Spanish. Julian speaks English and Afrikaans (A creole of Dutch, German, English and African languages). They both have had 2 months of German. Thus, the explanation involved tons of hands and mixed languages….After a bit of concern, Jair finally talked the guys into heading to deeper water…

and showed them how to set up – while he took the first dive (a back flip off of Kai’s Shoulders):

Not very long after – Jair convinced Julian and then Kai to do the backflip (Julian at the start, and mid flip):

After all that diving, the guys decided they were hungry, so we headed back to the shade and enjoyed chatting and some refreshment.

By 6pm, we were all tired, and decided to head home. It was a fun day, and a fond farewell from classmates who really made a great impression on me. Guys, when you read this, know you’re invited to Ireland – and have a place to stay. Oh, and Katlyn – I love the dirt drawing:

Christopher Street Day

IMGP4898-2

One of the biggest parties in Berlin every year is the Gay Pride Parade, also known as Christopher Street Day. Christopher Street Day (CSD) Parade is an enormous outdoor Gay / Lesbian Pride Party which has taken place every summer in Berlin since 1979. The festival is named after the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York City which was directly caused by a police raid on a gay bar on Christopher Street.

IMGP4918-17

Amongst the largest Gay Rights parties in the world. Straight or Gay, when you’re there you’ll find costumes of all varieties and colors and styles, Huge Tractor Trailer type floats with sound systems, and plenty of live music, and DJ sets, and most importantly — plenty of Beer and happy people.

IMGP4930-24

This year’s theme was Normal is “other” (Normal ist Anders). Sort of saying that no one has a normal love – and that all love is “different”.

IMGP5009-85

IMGP5102-148

I have to say that by far, it’s one of the most enjoyable parties in the city (they march several kilometers – thus the photos of the INSANE SHOES they rocked the entire parade walking in) – but make no mistake, there are plenty of political agendas put forth here too.

Among this year’s ajendas were the rights for Gays to adopt children (they can already get married in the eyes of the law – if not in a church), putting forth better equality laws to protect people the world over – regardless of race, creed, religion, or sexual orientation.

IMGP4943-34

This year, my friend, Jean was in town, and I convinced him that we had to go to the parade, expecting that he’d want to leave after a few hours. Once he got there, he too had a great time – agreeing to stay from the beginning to the end – nearly 3 hours worth of parade. One of the things that he noticed, which I noticed at my first CSD was that there aren’t any protesters, just party people. Likewise, there were entire families that had come out to the party – just to teach their kids and encourage them to be more open minded.

IMGP4921-19

Even though I’m straight, Many of my closest friends are Gay, and I love them for being who they are. I feel like by attending, I show my support for them and their rights just as much as my own.

IMGP5074-130

After all, I believe that love can come in many shapes and sizes, and where it appears, only the heart can ever know.

Berlin is So Out of the Box… and the Closet..

In the US, we’re pretty conservative. More so than most of the western world – and Utah, well, let’s not even discuss the conservativeness of the state whose predominant religion has people covered from knees to elbows by their undergarments (don’t even say the word sex!).

The thing with Berlin is that there is always something going on – especially in the Summer. Tonight is the start of the World Cup in South Africa (I went to a Bar with a couple of my classmates – Jamil who is South African, and Yan Li who is Chinese) to watch the opening match. Jamil is so happy and proud of his country for having the opportunity to host a world cup – he’s been bouncing off the walls for the last couple of days. It’s great, and I don’t blame him. It’s one of the most positive things in the news from Africa as a whole for many years.

Anyhow – On the way to the Bar, I saw the following poster (taken by the cell phone camera) which made me stop, take two steps back and think “Did I Read that Right?!?” and go back for a look to confirm “Yes, Yes, I did see that right.” The summary was a thought of the folks back home are NEVER going to believe this – because not only is Berlin so OUT of the BOX and comfortable with sexuality that they allow live Porn shows… – but it’s also LIVE GAY PORN show. Yes, Berlin is Out of the Box, and Out of the Closet.

Berlin is so out of the box, they advertise live porn- on the street!

The guys both chuckled at my pause to take a picture, but seriously, I think they understood why I had to do it. On a side note, this weekend is also the Christopher Street Parade (Gay Pride) and the school I attend is in the “gay district” where they’re having a huge street fair, thus the tent in the right hand corner.
