Fibbers – Dem Fools

IMGP5966-9

3.28.2013 – The Thursday before Good Friday, here in Ireland. That night I went to Fibber Magees (aka ‘old’ Fibbers) on Parnell St here in Dublin, Ireland to watch an Evening of Rock & Roll bands, with the final band being a Rory Gallagher Tribute. It was a fun evening – with 3 Euro drinks, a good crowd (Friday being a day off for many, despite the ban on alcohol hitting at Midnight) and lots of great music.

The second band of the evening was Dem Fools. I hadn’t seen them play before and was pleasantly surprised. They’re a local 5 piece group originating from here in Dublin, Ireland. They are made up of Ais O’Reilly – Lead Vocals, Mooney Tunes – Keyboard, Gerry Martin – Lead Guitar,
Bernard McGowan – Bass, and Fergus Gannon – Drums. They have a pleasant Indie / Reggae / Rock & roll type sound. The singer, Ais has good crowd interaction, and you can tell that she really enjoys performing in front of the crowd as she sings and dances her way through each song. The band have a new single out on i-tunes – as of April 1 (no coincidence there) and after hearing their music, I did pick up a cd of the evening and have been enjoying it ever since.

The first band playing was T’anks General. This was their second gig as a 4 piece band, and they totally rocked out. The crowd was small as the band started playing initially, but as they got going, the place filled up and everyone was toe-tapping to the T’anks General Jazz – Bluesy and Rock & Roll original sound.

Happiness in Today’s World

Orange and Pink Rose

Serious Question: I keep seeing lots of motivational websites, power over thinking blah blah happy happy. How to manage weight and be happy, how to be happy with your spouse, how to be happy with your life, how to be a happy parent, how to be happy in your job… how to be motivated for this or that.

I’m looking at them and thinking superficial bunch of shite. What is it with the modern world that thinks we have to be happy and stress free and motivated all the time?

Is it not more normal that I’m happy, and I’m sad, and I’m frustrated, demotivated, and I’m stressed at various points in my life? Is it just less acceptable anymore to be something other than “happy” in today’s world?? What is wrong with just being what you are at the time – and working your way through it?

Am I alone in thinking that some of these constantly “chipper” websites are mal-adjusted and couldn’t deal with real life when it bites them in the ass? Am I wrong in feeling that they are almost too happy – gushy – here have an ice cream happy – instead of actually offering something that allows someone to realistically cope?

Please tell me your thoughts, because I’m starting to think I’m the one that’s crazy because I’m not happy all the time – when maybe I should be taking the happy pill they are trying to sell.
