In April, Aoife and I decided it was the perfect night for a walk. After some discussion about maybe going to Phoenix Park, but I got it in my head that I wanted to go someplace else, because Phoenix Park is so busy and there’s lots of traffic.

The solution was to come to mind when I was searching for “local” parks. On Google, I learned about the 600,000 Euro investment being made in St. Catherine’s Park (which runs from Lucan to Leixlip) this summer to upgrade the facilities, and decided it might be someplace worth visiting.

Built around an old church and St. Catherine’s Abbey ruins, the park features open walking spaces, a woodland walk, a river walk, some farm animals behind a gate, plenty of open fields (including cricket grounds) and a huge brand new play area for the kids.

There is also an amazing array of fields of flowers – in early spring – it was yellow with daffodils and red with tulips. Once those had gone, the fields were violet… with blooming onions and pale lavender flowers. There’s also a section along the river with lots and lots of fragrant natural garlic which was in full white bloom.

Add in the few fruit trees, lack of traffic, a decent length walk from Maynooth to Lucan, and the easy access – well, I think I’ll be going back soon to see more than just the River walk and the walk around the open fields.

Autumn Leeds

Magical Bench 2

Late last month, I was blessed with the chance to head to the home of JL, for Jewish New Year. She comes from Leeds, and had promised that we would have super weather. I couldn’t wait to go, meet her lovely family (Her parents just had their 40th wedding Anniversary), relax and have a bit of time out.

I can say that she certainly delivered on the promise of the weather. The first blush of autumn was certainly on the trees, but we were out in our shirt sleeves and sandals until 11pm – on the first of October. This rarely happens in Europe – let alone in UK or Ireland. In fact, it was so warm, I had to buy a sundress while I was there and came home with a touch of sun tan. All I can say is that it was perfect – and because it was such beautiful weather, we spent lots of time at the parks in and around Leeds.

One of the parks that we went to was a lovely park that was made out of a defunct Amusement park, called Golden Acre (Mrs. L’s favorite place). The park has several themed gardens around a pond, including an Experimental garden, a flower garden (complete with the biggest flowers I’ve seen in ages), and a nice cafe in the middle of it all. There was also a charming old guy who apparently comes every day to feed some of the friendliest squirrels I’ve ever seen. This little lady was so friendly, she posed for pictures – and got a few peanuts in return.

Other than spending a few says in Synagogue where the New Year was being celebrated with the blowing of the Shofar, eating Mrs.L’s fabulous cooking and chatting a lot with the delightful Mr. L, JL and I went out in Leeds and had some fun time doing a bit of shopping in the Leeds Arcades from the Victorian Era. More on that tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the sunset.

Made it, and alive

The park near my flat.

Hi everyone!

Well, I have made it to Ireland and am still alive. My furniture has arrived, and I”m slowly getting unpacked. I’m enjoying life here, and am laughing at the fact that it seems that every other day I’m getting soaked going to or from work. It’s amusing from the “well, it’s Ireland – what the heck did I expect” perspective. I’m looking into getting a proper pair of Wellingtons (aka wellies – aka galoshes) and a good waterproof jacket so that I am at least partly dry in between each of the walks to/from work and home. Hopefully I’ll find one I like, that fits, and that isn’t too expensive very soon.

On other notes, I did get a little brief visit with my great aunt last weekend – she was in town for the start of 14 day tour. She’s doing quite well, and she took a few photographs of us while we were out to dinner in the city. On the bad side, I took a ton of photographs of the trip over ( 20 hours of driving, then some 57 hours on the ferry in 4 days as I went to Ireland, back to France to return the car, then back to Ireland again) and also of my first trip to the Guinness factory, and some initial shots of Dublin – only to promptly lose my camera. I’m not sure, but I think I left it in the back of a cab after seeing my Aunt – and am trying now desperately to retrieve it (or at least the card out of it) as futile a chance as it may be.

I do, however, have a new smart phone – which takes pictures and video and does 10,000 other things I haven’t figured out yet. It’s not a great camera, but I suppose it’ll be ok for the moment – until I get my big one unpacked and find the tripods among the multitude of boxes that still remain. So, without further adieu – here’s a few pictures from the park that is 3 blocks from my apartment – complete with large green spaces, plenty of trees, and a pond. Riddick is very happy with the park – and all the doggies he gets to meet in there. (Is it just me, or are Irish doggies more friendly than German ones?)

More of the park and one happy dog.

Anyhow, more on how I’m settling in and hopefully photos of the apartment soon – once I’m done unpacking.
