Last night, after not having slept for a couple nights (insomnia is a joy) I finally went to sleep. That nice deep sleep where nothing usually wakes me up.
About 2:30 am, I was woken up by a huge explosion that shook the windows and the entire house. Not having my wits about me, I thought my god! I wish those drunk people in the empty lot would quit shooting off fireworks and big booming ones at that (this happens often). A couple minutes later, I hear a loud POP!!! that I again put down to fireworks.
I dozed off… then the sirens… racing up Oderstr. less than a block from my house. I think ahh good – the police are gonna get the dumbasses. Doze back off again, More sirens – this time . 10 minutes later, a series of huge pops one after the other …
Pop!!
POP!!
POP!!!!
My windows rattle in succession, and it keeps going – with some time in between each one – long enough for me to doze off, wake up, doze off – and finally put the pillows over my head, thinking obviously the Police didn’t do their job. Again, a
Pop!!
I’m still groggy and not awake and think good grief – I wish the people in that damn empty lot would stop messing around. I want to sleep!
This morning, I get up and there’s helicopters flying around – up and over the street – and I am like what the heck? I look to the end of Oderstr. (about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away) and still see fire trucks and police blocking it off). AH I figure – it must be that the river flooded its banks again. Maybe that’s what I heard – because it was really bad weather last night and
Only it wasn’t. After waiting for a bus that was 20 minutes late – I finally found out what happened. The brewary behind me (which had a copper making facility in the bottom) exploded into fire.
The photos from last night say it all – and I’ll add a few of my own tonight – to show the building afterword….but there’s lots of photos up at:
(What does it say, however, about how often the drunken people use the empty lot behind me and make alot of noise – that I immediately assumed it was fireworks in that lot instead of waking up and wondering WTF??!!??)
Anyhow, per the news, they say it wasn’t Arson, and are eliminating lightening as the cause. Investigation will get underway once they get a chance. I’ll grab photos of the “remanants” tonight and add them. But all I can say is WOW. I wish the drunk people were less “in the empty lot” so I would have gotten up!!
