Happy Mardi Gras

Here in Ireland, Mardi Gras (aka Shrove Tuesday) is known for being pancake Tuesday. Pancakes are suddenly the “it” thing, and every where you go, pancakes (sweet and savory) are served.

Where I’m from, however, we have King Cake and a big party. After 5 years in Ireland – I was craving king cake. So, I went online and found a recipe for a braided king cake. I started out by making the dough, layering the cinnamon sugar paste, then rolling it up, then stretching it into long tubes. From there, it was braided:

It went in the oven for 35 minutes, and while it was baking, I mixed up some simple glaze of powdered sugar, a dash of water, and food coloring to make “gold”, “green”, and Violet.

when it was done baking, it had risen quite a bit – and looked and smelled fabulous:

Finally, when the cake was cool, I drizzled it with the colored glaze – added a piece of candy for the “prize” and wrapped it up – all set to take to work.

The guys? Well, they seemed to like it. Especially Bill, who got the candy – and is king for the day.

Happy Mardi Gras, y’all! Laissez les bons temps rouler!!

Origami Stars & Cards

Look at the stars. Look how they shine for you...#origami #stars #starrynight #coldplay #christmas #ornaments

One of my favorite times of the Holiday season is sending out Christmas cards. This year, I didn’t have time to make very many ornaments to put in them (I mailed 55 cards before Christmas), but I did a few origami stars and some wooden ornaments to put in cards I hand delivered.

My hand delivered cards to those who make my day better in all the hidden ways – the people that work behind the scenes in my office – the event planning team, the security staff, the mailroom clerks, the coffee bar staff, the cooks, and most of all, the cleaners. These folks are often forgotten by those that work here – even though they are the ones that get paid the least – and keep the place going everyday. Most were surprised at the little card/gift – and delighted to get it.

The best part is that they didn’t take very long to see the smiles and the returns when I gave them out on Friday. I returned to the office today – and what was sitting on my desk?

A little card – all set for me to make an ornament with for someone next year.

Random acts of kindness – they truly do make the world go around.

Enfield Little Library

Enfield, in County Meath is where some friends of mine are living. While visiting them, we went for a walk and had some hot chocolate in the cafe. On the way back, we paused at the cutest little art installation – named the “littlest library”.

Basically it’s two cabinets up on posts which look like giant bird houses. You open the glass fronted cabinet and inside are books for children and adults (depending on which cabinet). They’re free to “borrow” and return and it’s based on the honesty principle.

Hanukkah 2015 with the Warners

It’s is located across from Dixons on Main Street, and they have a website at:

and it’s open 7 days a week from dawn till dusk! We open at around 9AM and close at 19:00 PM.

If you’re in town – it’s worth checking out and trading some books. Also – what a great idea for other small communities out there!
